I am so heartbroken......

December 28, 2009 was my 10th wedding anniversary. When Mike and I got engaged, we always said we would "think" about a bigger diamond "maybe" on our 10th anniversary. Well last fall we discussed it and we both decided that the original engagement diamond was so beautiful that the only thing I would change was the setting. We went back to the same jeweler in Boston and within 5 minutes I found the exact setting I had dreamed about. The jeweler took my "original" diamond and placed it in the new setting within a few days. It was absolutely stunning (at least to me).

Now... since I'm home most of the time, glittering or gardening, I only wear my jewelry when I get dressed up nice to go out for the day (otherwise in overalls!). Today I had a doctor's appointment in Boston so I was all dressed up and wearing my wedding band, a pretty brooch, and earrings. Here where the story gets really sad.....

On the way home from the doctor's office, I looked down at my wedding ring and the entire setting including the diamond was missing. It literally fell off and there was a hole there. No prongs, no diamond, just a hole. I realized this as I was approaching the exit to my husband's workplace (thank goodness~!). I went by his office and showed him what happened. I knew he would be equally as upset as I was since he made me promise to never trade in or exchange our engagement ring. I promised him I never would, it was our first bond and commitment to spend a long life together.

I realize that with insurance I will more than likely get another one just as beautiful ~ and for that I am thankful. But I know that millions of my lady friends out there can understand how much their engagement ring means to them and their spouses. Having lost mine today is leaving a giant hole in my heart and the only people I can tell is you 'cause this is where I spend most of my time and you are all so compassionate.

It does help to be able to let out the grief sometimes just by writing it down. I know many might say it's materialistic and can be replaced. But to me it was my "treasured heirloom".

I thank you for listening my friends.

  1. Oh Cathy...I am so sorry that happened! Yes, the diamond can be replaced but it's the sentiment behind it that is priceless.

Sending you a big comforting hug Sweet Friend!

  3. Dear Cathy, I know how sad your heart must be. My husbands wedding band was stolen when our house was broken into. He could not wear his ring at his job for safety reasons and when the thieves took it our hearts were broken too. But, we were safe, and young and was able to replace it. We held the new ring tight in our hands and as I placed it on his finger we vowed no matter what life throws at us, as long as we were together was all that counts. You will always feel sad about your beautiful ring and as you approach the next ten years, I hope you are still in good health and still in love. Maybe, if you retrace your steps you will find it! Best wishes.

Oh I am so sorry.....My engagement ring has 5 diamonds in it. They are from my Beloved Grandmother's engagement ring. I had it reset as she recieved it in 1918 & it had gotten very thin on the band.
I cherish it & I don't care how much insurance is on it ....I, like you, would be heartbroken if I lost it!!
If the whole setting came loose I would think about taking it back to the jeweler as it seems like it wasn't set right. JMO!!

  6. I totally understand! I didn't get my engagement ring until my first wedding anniversary, but hubby told me at the time maybe later, we could get me a bigger one (it was a small 1/4 carat). Well, years later, I just couldn't bear to part with it, so he got me a diamond enhancer to go with it. If I lost those two (they are attached), I would be positively ill. So sorry it happened to you.

Have you put out an add in the newspaper or craigslist it may turn up you never know. That's not materialistic at all it's sentimental to be sad about your ring, I am so sorry for your loss, I'm sending lots of hugs your way!

  9. oh, Cathy, that is so sad. I understand totally. It's not because it's a diamond, it's because it was THE diamond. I am thinking of you. SueXX

  10. Cathy you know our shoulders are broad. We are glad you wanted to be able to share your sadness with us all here in blogland. There is no words to say that will heal that hole. NO other ring can take it's place. But, Time will pass and it will get easier. You will never forget and you shouldn't but it will be better in time. Look in your car and see if you may have bumped it and it fell off in the floorboard. Just maybe..my love and huggggggggggs to you.. Sheila

  12. Oh, Cathy, I'm so sorry you lost your diamond! There is so much sentiment attached to your wedding and engagement rings. I don't think it is materialistic at all! I know my heart would be breaking, if it was me. So I'm sending you a big hug!

  13. Cathy,
That is so awful! Did you try to retrace your tracks??? My diamond fell out of the setting once and I almost died. I found it in my Den right in front of the chair I had been sitting in earlier that morning before I went shopping all over the place. Do you remember maybe getting it snagged on something? I do know how you feel because I was sick about mine. Let us know if by some chance someone would find it and return it to you.
    Hugs,
    Debbie

  14. Oh, Cathy, I'm so, so sorry to hear about your ring. I don't believe it is simply a material thing as it is a symbol of the commitment we make with our spouse. I'm so sorry this happened to you.

  21. I would be heart broken as well. We didn't have much money when we got engaged but I loved my ring. My husband said maybe we would get a bigger diamond but I wouldn't change a THING because of the sentimental value it holds. I lost one of the diamond chips in the band recently but haven't taken it to get fixed because I would feel naked without my ring on. I dread leaving it at the jewelers. If I lost it I would definately be heart broken too!

    Good Luck!

  23. I am so sorry to hear this!! I never got an engagement ring..I did get a promise ring. I too don't wear it cause I am afraid the stone will go flying off somewhere. I have been with my hubby 20 years..and although I wear my wedding ring everyday..the promise ring means so much more to me! I take it out every now and then and look at it. I was 16 when he bought it for me :)

So When you get this new one..just think in 10 years..you'll remember the wonderful day you got your new one that will never be replaced :)

  24. I'm so sorry that such a gut wrenching thing has happened to you. I know that this will never be forgotten and that no other ring will ever be the same. I hope you've let the jeweler know of his mistake.

  26. Hi Cathy, I lost my diamond out of my engagement setting about 15 years ago, and yes, it is terribly upseting. I think you should contact your jeweler that redid your ring, it seems that maybe their work was not as good as it should have been . Since this was less than 3 months ago, I think you should speak to them about some kind of compensation. Just a thought.
hugs, hope it all works out.

  27. Oh Cathy, I'm sorry to hear this. It's not materialistic. It's sentimental and there isn't anything wrong with that.

Your new diamonds will be just as lovely and you come to find sentimental value in them too.

    Hugs!

  28. Oh my heart aches for you. I understand how very heartbroken you must be. I am sure you have already called the doctors office etc and searched your car. I will pray that somehow someway it is returned to you. Thank goodness you have what sounds like a wonderful husband to stand by your side. Many Blessings, Jonnie

  29. I am so sorry, sweetpea! I know a new diamond can't replace the one that meant so much to the both of you, but maybe it will help a little. What an awful thing to happen to you.

  30. Cathy...I am so very sad for you. I know it can be replaced, but it just isn't the same, now is it?? You will get a new one, and create new memories. I lost a diamond bracelet awhile back, and the insurance paid for a new one, then they cancelled our homeowners insurance, because we filed a claim. Can you believe that? It is not right. I hope your day gets better.

  31. I can't even imagine how that feels. I'm so sorry for your loss, that makes me sad. God always heals our broken hearts in due time.
Perhaps whomever finds it will put an add in the paper or some such thing. People are good, for the most part, so I hope it is not really lost but finds it's way back to you.
